You raise the Commander’s sword, forcing his chin upward, ordering his gaze to connect with yours.

“Take me to my blade, and I might let you live.”

A satisfied smirk plays on your lips, remembering how he did the same to you once he took you captive.

This Elven commander–masquerading as a human.

Tricking you.

What else has he done? You remember the strawberries from last night and realize he must have spelled them somehow.

The Commander gracefully rises, still bare-chested. He towers over you by at least a full head. He places his hands on either side of him, splayed out.

He means to make it seem like he’s defenseless.

But you know better.

And even though you didn’t trust him before, you know his heritage now.

The danger is even greater.

His piercing green eyes narrow. “All this for a blade?”

“Yes.” You raise the sword under his chin, making him almost stare at the ceiling.

“Relax,” he says.

You bristle. He’s trying to handle you. Too late for that. “I don’t need to relax. My blade, Commander.

He pauses, nearly turning at the term you have used. “I will take you to it.” His voice is a deep, velvet rasp. Even though you know he’s an elf, It hasn’t lost its potency. You wish it didn’t affect you so. And you’re unsure what it all means.

“Good,” you say.

You keep the sword tightly under his chin and walk around him slowly, in a half circle, until you’re standing behind him.

The sword is directly under his throat.

“Lead the way.”

As you exit his chambers, you’re surprised when you notice no guards posted.

Only the firelight of torches lights your way along the empty corridor from his bedchamber.

“You’ll never get out of here, y/n. You must realize that.”

You stifle a gasp. What does he know?

You narrow your eyes defiantly. “Looks like you’re wrong,” you say, pressing the sword tighter to his neck. He grunts in disapproval.

“I’m nearly halfway there. Halfway to my freedom,” you say.

He leads you down a long, shadowy labyrinth. But an uneasy feeling crawls through your belly the further you delve into the darkened corridor.

Is this the right way?
